UNILAG Students Impress Management with Stunning Presentations on Lagoon Front Remodeling

“Your presentations are highly imaginative and exceptional. Henceforth, we shall look no further outside here but for you whenever we need structural designs.”

The remark was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS when a group of students from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental Science wowed the University of Lagos (UNILAG) management team on Thursday, October 5, 2023, with their exceptional presentations on the re-modeling of the varsity’s Lagoon front.

The students, grouped into three (3), showcased their innovative ideas and designs, in the presence of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor AyodeleAtsenuwa; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Lucian O. Chukwu; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Bola Oboh; Ag. Registrar, Mrs. Olakunle Makinde; and Bursar, Mrs. Oluwafunlola Y. Adekunle.

The first group’s proposal titled Unlocking Legacy – making the Strange Familiar, showcased the group’s idea of restoring the Lagoon front by creating an inclusive space that catered to individuals even with disabilities. The design included wheelchair-accessible ramps, tactile paving, and designated seating areas to ensure equal access for all students. The group’s attention to detail and consideration for inclusivity impressed both the management team and her peers.

The 3D design included a series of interconnected walkways surrounded by lush greenery, creating a peaceful environment for students to relax and study. Additionally, sustainable features such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems to promote environmental consciousness were incorporated in the proposal.

The presentation of the second group: A Walk Down Memory Lane focused on a monument design that serves as an interactive bridge as well as a way to store memories. The bridge is to foster different social interactions such as plays, lectures, picnic among others. The monument will also embrace a tag system that will allow alumni officially leave their mark on a university monument.

The third group’s concept titled UNILAG Tower, proposed a tall edifice as an indispensable and practical art form that creates an identity from symbolism and culture, seamlessly integrated into daily routines. The proposed edifice is to assume a multi-faceted role by serving as an efficient hub during special occasions, like Founder’s Day.

Reacting to the presentations, Professor Ogunsola expressed satisfaction with the creativity, thoughtfulness, and professionalism displayed by the students. She acknowledged the potentials of the young architects, and expressed commitment to considering the students’ ideas in future renovation plans for the University.

She disclosed the university administration’s readiness to collaborate further with the Department of Architecture to explore the implementation of the proposed ideas.

In her comments, the Dean of Faculty of Environmental Science, Professor Modupe Omirin thanked the management for being a part of the learning exercise. She also commended the students for their outstanding work, while stressing that their innovative designs have the potential to transform the University of Lagos into a vibrant and sustainable space that will benefit the entire university community.

Her words, “As these talented young architects continue their academic journey, their contributions to this assignment serve as a testament to their potential to shape the future of architectural design in Nigeria and beyond”.

Earlier in his remarks, the Head of Department, Dr. Paul Obi commended the students’ high level of dedication, and strong determination to present detailed and visually stunning renderings and 3D models of their proposed re-modeling plans for the site. He noted that the plans are accompanied by detailed explanations of design choices, materials used, and how their proposals aligned with the university’s mission and values.

Similarly, Course Lecturer of ARC 836, Arc Bisi Sulu-Olumide explained that the course assignment was initiated to challenge students to envision a new and improved look for the UNILAG Lagoon front.

According to her, the choice of putting up ideas for the Lagoon front area holds significant importance to both students and faculty especially as the site is in need of a revitalization to enhance its aesthetic appeal and functionality.

She posited that the students under the guidance of other members of faculty worked tirelessly to develop comprehensive plans that addressed various aspects such as landscaping, infrastructure, sustainability, and recreational spaces. They incorporated modern architectural techniques while keeping in mind the historical significance of the University.

At the end of the presentation, the Vice Chancellor led other members of Management team in a photo session with the students.
