“The Department of Accounting was established in 1962, as part of the Faculty of Business and Social Studies in the first phase of the development of the University of Lagos and produced its first set of graduates of the Bachelor Degree in Accounting in 1965. In 1967, the Faculty of Business and Social Science was split into two schools, the School of Administration and, Social Studies. With effect from October 1973, the School of Administration was renamed the Faculty of Business Administration. The Department remained a part of the separate Faculty of Business Administration and has over the years developed a reputation for learning excellence. The Department has consistently produced accounting graduates who have made and are making notable contributions in both public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy.
The Department’s Postgraduate Programme (M.Sc.) was established in 1982. The Department administers the programme through a Departmental Postgraduate Programmes Committee headed by the Head of the Department (HOD) and subject to the supervision of the Board of Postgraduate Studies, under the Chairmanship of the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies. The Board of Postgraduate Studies is responsible to the Senate in ensuring high quality Postgraduate Programmes throughout the University.
The Head of Department after consulting with the Dean of School of Postgraduate Studies appoints the Coordinator of the Programme to coordinate the academic activities on the Programme and represent the Department on the Board of Postgraduate Studies. The Postgraduate Coordinator chairs the Departmental Postgraduate Programmes Committee meetings and the Committee is responsible for the quality control of the programmes in the Department.
The Coordinator of the Programme is responsible for the day-to-day running of the members (teachers on the Programme) and students, welfare of the students and processing of results. The Coordinator is assisted by an administrative staff.
