“The study of Architecture in the University of Lagos originated in the Faculty of Engineering, as the School of Environmental Sciences, under the headship of Professor J. S. Myers, from the School of Architecture, University of Minnesota. The Faculty became autonomous in 1973/74 session as the Faculty of Environmental Design, with Architecture as the only Department in addition to Urban Design Option.
In the 1980/81 restructuring exercise, the first professional degree, which was BES/MED was changed to BES/B.Arch. due to the establishment of Schools of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS). The Faculty later had three interdependent departments, namely; Architecture, Building Technology and City and Regional Planning. The following Postgraduate programmes were approved for the Department.
The actualisation of these postgraduate programmes came into light in 1999/2000 when the BES/B. Arch as first professional degree was re-structured into two- tier, B.Sc/MED programmes; the BSc (Bachelor of Science, Architecture) s undergraduate degree while the MED (Master of Environmental Design, (Architecture) as a postgraduate degree in the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS). Similarly, the Master of Architecture (M. Arch) degree programme admitted its first 13 students in 1999/2000 Session.
In 2003/04 session, two other post-graduate programmes were approved while the MUD and M.Phil/Ph.D were resuscitated and domiciled at the Faculty but relocated to the Department of Architecture in the following year (2004/05). The new two Postgraduate programmes are the Postgraduate Diploma in environmental Design (PGDED) and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA)”
