Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Accounting:
To qualify for admission to the above programme:

(i) A candidate must have a Master's degree in Accounting or a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from this University or any other recognized university.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Accounting
To qualify for admission to the above programme:

(i) A candidate must have a Master's degree in Accounting or an M.Phil. degree in Accounting from this University or any other recognized university.

M.Phil Actuarial Science / Ph.D. Actuarial Science

M.Phil Actuarial Science

Admission Requirements
Candidate for admission into M.Phil. Actuarial Science shall have the following:

Candidate for admission into M.Phil. Actuarial Science shall have the following:
i. A minimum of Second Class Upper Division or its equivalent in Actuarial Science, Mathematics/Statistics, Economics or Finance

ii. Candidate with Master of Science degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics/ Statistics, Economics or Finance with a minimum CPGA of 3.50 or its equivalent

iii. Candidate may also be required to satisfy the department in a selection process.

Ph.D. Actuarial Science

Admission Requirements

Candidate for admission into Ph.D. Actuarial Science shall have the following:
i. Candidate with a Master of Science degree in Actuarial Science with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent

ii. Candidate with M.Phil. in Actuarial Science with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or its equivalent

iii. Candidate may also be required to satisfy the department in a selection process.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Adult Education

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Adult Education

Admission Requirements Admission into the M.Phil. programme is open to two categories of candidates.

i. Candidates who already possess the M.Ed. in Adult Education, with a CGPA of at least 3.50, and

ii. Candidates who already possess a Bachelor's honours degree in Adult Education with at least a Second Class Honours Upper Division.

iii. Candidates must satisfy all the requirements of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Adult Education

Admission Requirements for Doctor of Philosophy in Adult Education (Ph.D.) Admission is open to candidates who already possess:

i. The Master's Degree in any relevant area of specialization in Adult Education with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 or 60%.

ii. The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Degree in Adult Education of the University of Lagos or any other approved University.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Anatomy

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Anatomy

To qualify for admission to the above programme, a candidate must be:

i. Post-registration Medical or Dental graduate or a graduate with a Bachelor's Degree with at least second class upper Division in Anatomy.

ii. An M.Sc. degree in Anatomy.

iii. Candidates for M. Phil. programme may be required to undergo a selection process.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Anatomy

Candidates seeking admissions for Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Anatomy, in addition to meeting the general requirements for admission to the University, must possess any of the following qualifications from recognized institutions:

i. Masters degree in Anatomy (M.Sc.) with a minimum CGPA of 4.00

ii. Masters degree in Anatomy (M.Sc.) with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 for admission into M. Phil. and subsequent conversion into Ph.D.

iii. Candidates for Ph.D. programme may be required to satisfy the Department in an interview or examination or both.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Analytical Chemistry

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Analytical Chemistry

The course is open to candidates having:

i. A Bachelor's honours degree in Chemistry with minimum of Second Class Upper Division.

ii. M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry CGPA 3.50 to 3.99 of this University or other approved Universities.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Analytical Chemistry

Admission requirements:
The course is open to candidates having:

i. M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry (CGPA 4.00 and above)

ii. M. Phil. in Analytical Chemistry (with CGPA 4.00 and above)

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Entomology and Pest Management

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Applied Entomology and Pest Management

To qualify for admission into the Ph.D. programme in the University of Lagos, candidates must be a holder of:

(i) A Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division).

(ii) An M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate, with at least a CGPA of 3.5/5.0.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Applied Entomology and Pest Management

To qualify for admission into the Ph.D. programme in the University of Lagos, candidates must be a holder of:

(i) An M.Phil Degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate.

(ii) An M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate with at least a CGPA 4.00/5.00.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Architecture

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Architecture

The M.Phil programme is open to candidates who are:

(a) Graduates of this or other approved University who have obtained a Bachelors honours degree with minimum of Second Class Honours (Upper Division), or its equivalent in Architecture or any other relevant disciplines.

(b) Master's degree at the appropriate level or equivalent provided the Bachelors honours degree is not below Second Class (Lower Division) Honours

(c) Satisfy all other requirements of School of Post-graduate Studies.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Architecture.

The Candidate must have the following:

(a) A Master's Degree by Course work at the appropriate GPA level, from this University or other approved University.

(b) A Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in Architecture from this University or its equivalent.

(c) Satisfy all existing requirements of the regulations of the school of Postgraduate Studies.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Arts and Social Science Education

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Arts and Social Science Education.

The M.Phil. degree programme in Arts and Social Sciences Education is designed for candidates wishing to do postgraduate research in Arts and Social Sciences Education subjects. The M.Phil. Programme shall be open to candidates having:
i. A Bachelor's honours degree or equivalent in Arts and Social Sciences Education with a minimum of Second Class (Upper);

ii. A Master's degree in Arts and Social Sciences Education with a GPA of 3.50 and above;

iii. Candidates for M.Phil. Programme may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Arts and Social Science Education.

The Ph.D. degree programme in Arts and Social Sciences Education is designed for candidates wishing to do postgraduate research in Arts and Social Sciences Education subjects.

The Ph.D. Programme in Arts and Social Sciences Education shall be open to candidates having:
i. An M.Phil. or equivalent in Arts and Social Sciences Education.

ii. A Master's Degree in Arts and Social Sciences Education with a GPA of 4.00 and above.

iii. Candidates for Ph.D. Programme may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Biochemistry

i. M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry, Physiological Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Chemistry of this University or any other University recognized by the Senate.

ii. B.Sc. Honours degree in Biochemistry obtained at least at the level of Second Class Upper Division from the University of Lagos or any other University recognized by the Senate.

iii. Candidate will be required to satisfy the Department in an interview.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Biochemistry

The programme is open to the following candidates:

(i) Those who have M.Phil. degree in Biochemistry or candidates with Master's degree in Biochemistry from this university or any other recognized university.

(ii) The programme is open to candidate with M.Phil. or M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry of this University or of any other University approved by Senate.

(iii) Candidate must present a research proposal and will be required to satisfy the Department in an interview.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Botany

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Botany

The M.Phil. Programme is open to candidates with either:

(a) A Bachelor's honours degree in Botany, Biology, Microbiology, Agricultural Biology or any other related subject with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) or

(b) An M.Sc. in Botany or related subject, of this or any other approved University.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Botany

The Ph.D. Programme is open only to candidates having an M.Phil or equivalent qualification in Botany or related subject.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Building

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Building

To qualify for admission into (M.Phil.) in Building, candidates must have:

i. A Bachelor's honours degree with a minimum of Second Class Honours (Upper Division), or its equivalent in Building, and Quantity Surveying.

ii. Or a good M.Sc./M.Tech. in Construction Management, or Building with GPA of at least 2.50 on a scale of 5.00 in the grading system in use before 1990/91 session and 3.50 in the grading system after 1990/91 session from the University of Lagos or any other University approved by the University of Lagos Senate.

iii. Candidates may be required to undergo a selection programme at the Department.

iv. Candidates must satisfy all the requirements of the Department and the School of Postgraduate Studies.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Building

To qualify for admission into (Ph. D.) in Building candidates must have:

i. Candidate MUST have First Degree in Building or Quantity Surveying or its equivalent

ii. An M.Sc./M.Tech. in Construction Management or its equivalent with a GPA of at least 2.79 in the grading system in use before 1990/91 or 4.00 in the grading system after the 1990/91 session or an M.Phil. in Construction Management or its equivalent from the University of Lagos or any other University approved by the University of Lagos Senate.

iii. Candidates may be required to undergo a selection programme at the Department.

iv. Candidates must satisfy all the requirements of the Department and the School of Postgraduate Studies.

v. Candidate to liaise with the department to secure a supervisor's consent before applying.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cell Biology and Genetics

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Cell biology and Genetics

Entry Requirements

The M. Phil. Programme is open to candidates with any of the following:

i. At least a Second Class (Upper Division) Bachelor's honours degree or its equivalent, of this or any approved University; in Biology, Botany, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Zoology.

ii. A Master of Science by course work of this or any approved University, in the area mentioned in (1) above with a CGPA of not less than 3.50.

iii. Candidate may be required to satisfy a selection process in the form of written or/and oral interview or examination.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Cell Biology and Genetics

The Ph. D. Programme is open to candidates with either:

i. A Master of Science by course work of this or any approved University, in Biology, Botany, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Zoology with a CGPA of not less than 4.00.

ii. A Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) or M. Sc. by research of this or any other approved University in the areas mentioned in (1) above.

iii. Candidates may be required to satisfy a selection process in the form of written or/and oral interview or examination.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Chemical Engineering

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Chemical Engineering

1. The M. Phil. programme shall be open to candidates having:
(i) A Bachelor's (Honours) Degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) from the University of Lagos or any other approved University.

(ii) A good M. Sc. between 3.50 to 3.99 or equivalent in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos or any other approved University.

2. Candidates for the M.Phil. programme may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Chemical Engineering

1. The Ph.D. programme shall be open only to candidates having an M. Phil. with minimum CGPA of 4.00 or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, and to candidates that have M. Sc. in Chemical Engineering with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 from the University of Lagos or any other approved University.

2. Candidates for either the M.Phil. or Ph.D. programme may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process.

3. A candidate must either have an M.Phil. degree in Chemical Engineering from this university, or a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering with the appropriate grade from this university or any other recognized university.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry offers M.Phil. / Ph.D. in the following areas:

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Chemistry

Entry Requirements:

The course is open to candidates having:

i. A Bachelor's honours degree in Chemistry with minimum of Second Class Upper Division.

ii. M.Sc. in Chemistry (CGPA 3.50 to 3.99).

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Chemistry

(d) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) Analytical Chemistry

Entry Requirements:
(i) This programme is open to candidates who possess Master's degree in Analytical Chemistry from this university or any other recognized university.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Civil and Environmental Engineering

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Civil and Environmental Engineering in the following areas:

1. Highway and Traffic Engineering
2. Structural Engineering
3. Water Resources and Environmental Engineering
4. Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering

Admission is open to:

(i) Candidates with Master's degrees in Civil Engineering or a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with the appropriate grade from this university or any other recognized university.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Civil and Environmental Engineering in the following areas:

The programme is open to candidates who possess:

i. M.Sc. degree in Clinical Pathology / Chemical Pathology

ii. MBBS degree of any University recognised by the senate and an additional Bachelor of Science degree with a minimum of a Second Class Upper degree in Clinical Pathology/ Chemical Pathology, Biochemistry or Physiology.

All candidates may be required to satisfy the department in a selection process.

(b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Clinical Pathology

The programme is open to candidates who possess:

i. M.Sc. degree with CGPA of 4.00 and above

ii. M.Phil degree in Clinical Pathology/ Chemical Pathology

iii. Satisfy all other requirements stipulated in the University Postgraduate Regulation

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Clinical Pharmacy

(a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Clinical Pharmacy

The programme is open to candidates who possess:
(i) Master's degree in Clinical Pharmacy from this University or any other recognized university, or

  • Admission Requirements

    1. The M.Phil. degree programme is open to candidates who have:
  • A Bachelor's honours degree in Law of this or other approved University, with at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or equivalent qualification or


  • A Master's degree by coursework in Law or any other relevant discipline of this or other approved University or equivalent qualification with a minimum CGPA of 3.50


  • 2. The Ph.D degree programme is open to candidates who have LLM degree with a grade point average of not less than 4.00 or M.Phil degree in Law of this or other approved University or equivalent qualification.

    3. A candidate for the M.Phil degree or the Ph.D degree may additionally be required to undergo a selection exercise or undertake such pre-requisite or concurrent studies and/or take such examination which may be prescribed by the Department.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) Commercial and Industrial Law

    Admission Requirements:

    In order to obtain the Ph.D degree in Law.

    1. A candidate with an M.Phil degree of this or other approved University or equivalent qualification must offer and pass course totalling a minimum number of six and a maximum number of 12 units.

    2. A candidate must satisfy all such other requirements of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

    3. A candidate with an LLM degree of this or other approved University or equivalent qualification must offer and pass course totalling a minimum of 12 units and a maximum of 24 units

  • Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science

    (a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Computer Science

    Entry Requirements:

    (a) A graduate of this or other approved University who has obtained the appropriate Bachelor's honours degree with at least a second class (Upper Division) Honours or Master's degree with CGPA of 3.50 at the appropriate level or equivalent may be admitted as a postgraduate student and registered as a candidate for the degree of Master of Philosophy.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science

    (a) A graduate of this or other approved University who has obtained the appropriate Bachelor's honours degree with at least a first class Honours or Master's degree with CGPA of 4.00 at the appropriate level or equivalent may be admitted as a postgraduate student and registered as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

    Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Community Health

    (a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Community Health

    Entry Requirements:

    To qualify for admission to the above programme:

    1. A candidate must possess a Bachelor's honours degree from this University or other University recognized by the University of Lagos Senate with at least a Second Class (Upper division) or a Master's degree with a CGPA of at least 3.50 in the grading system after 1990/91 session

    2. Admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D. programme is subject to the availability of relevant supervisors

    3. The candidates may be required to undergo a selection process as determined by the department

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Community Health

    Entry Requirements:

    1. A graduate of this University or other University as recognized by the University of Lagos Senate who has obtained the degree of the Masters of Philosophy may be admitted as a candidate for the Doctor of Philosophy.

    2. A graduate of this University or other University as recognized by the University of Lagos Senate who has obtained an appropriate Master's degree by coursework with a CGPA of at least 4.0 in the grading system after 1990/91 session.

    3. For M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes only admission will be processed at the beginning of each semester

    4. Candidates must clear with the department as to the availability of supervisors before applying

    5. The candidates may be required to undergo a selection process as determined by the department

    Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics

    (a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Economics

    To be considered for admission to this programme:
    (i) A candidate must have a Master's degree in Economics from this or any other recognized university, or

    (ii) A candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in Economics with the appropriate grade from this or any recognized university.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics

    Admission Requirements:
    An applicant must have a Master's degree in Economics or an Mphil. degree in Economics from this or any other recognized university.

    Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Administration

    (a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Educational Administration.
    To qualify for admission to the programme: i. Candidates must possess a Bachelor's honours degree from this University or any other approved University with at least a Second Class (Upper Division).

    ii. Candidates with a Master's degree with a minimum of CGPA of at least 3.50

    iii. All candidates to the M.Phil. programmes must contact the respective Department for availability of supervisors before applying.

    iv. The candidate may be required to undergo a selection process as determined by the Departments.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Administration.
    To qualify for the admission to the programme: i. A candidate who has obtained the degree of Master of Philosophy must have a minimum CGPA of 4.00

    ii. A candidate who has obtained the degree of Master of Education must have a minimum CGPA of 4.00

    iii. Candidates must clear with the respective Departments as to the availability of vacancies/supervisors before applying.

    iv. All candidates may be required to undergo a selection process as may be determined by the Department.

    Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Foundation

    (a) Master of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Educational Foundation.

    ii. Candidates who graduated with a minimum of second-class honours, upper division, are eligible for direct admission to the M.Phil. Programme.

    iii. Candidates may be required to attend and pass an interview.

    iv. Other requirements are as stated in the regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

    (a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Electrical & Electronics Engineering

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

    i. The programme shall be open to candidate with a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronics or Computer Engineering of the University of Lagos or any other approved University.

    ii. Candidate may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process after the general written entrance examination.

    iii. Candidate should possess either First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Bachelor of Science Degree (with Honours).

    As part of the selection process, the candidates may be required to undergo oral interview at the Department after the general written examination.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical & Electronics Engineering

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

    i. The programme shall be open to candidate with a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronics or Computer Engineering of the University of Lagos or any other approved University.

    ii. Candidate may be required to satisfy the Department in a selection process after the general written entrance examination.

    iii. Candidate should possess either First Class or Second Class (Upper Division) in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Bachelor of Science Degree (with Honours).

    Admission Requirements:

    To qualify for admission, a candidate must satisfy the following requirements.

    Masters of Philosophy (M.Phil.): The M.Phil. programmes is open to candidates who possess
    (i) Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) or its equivalent in a related field, with at least a grade of 2.50 in the grading system in use before 1990/91 section or 3.50 in the grading system after the 1990/91 session.

    (ii) M.Sc. in Urban and Regional Planning or related discipline with a grade of at least 2.50 on a scale of 5.00 in the grading system in use before 1990/91 session and 3.50 on the scale of 5.00 in the grading system after 1990/91 session.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Urban and Regional Planning

    Admission Requirements:

    (i) Candidates must possess an M.Sc. or M.Phil. or its equivalent in Urban and Regional Planning or a related discipline with at least a grade of 2.79 in the grading system in use before 1990/91 or 4.00 in the grading system after the 1990/91 session

    (ii) Candidates for Ph.D. must satisfy all other requirements as stipulated in the regulations of the School of Postgraduate Studies.

    (iii) Candidates for Ph.D. programme may be required to satisfy the department in a selection process.

    (i) Must be a holder of a Master's degree, or a Bachelor's degree with the approved grade, in Yoruba from the University of Lagos or any other recognized university.

    (ii) Must present a research proposal along with the application form for evaluation.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Yoruba

    Admission Requirements:

    Candidates applying for admission to the Ph.D. programme should
    i. Have at least a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours Degree in the relevant language or a good M.A. Degree or its equivalent in the relevant language with a minimum CGPA of 4.00 ; and

    ii. Show evidence of research potential.

    iii. Candidates with M.Phil. in relevant Language or Literature programme can convert to the Ph.D. programme after coursework with a minimum CGPA of 4.00.

    Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Zoology

    (a) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Zoology

    To qualify for admission into the Ph.D programme in the University of Lagos, candidates must possess:

    (i) A Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate with a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division).

    (ii) An M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate with at least a CGPA of 3.50/5.00.

    (b) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Zoology

    Admission Requirements:

    To qualify for admission into the Ph.D. programme in the University of Lagos, candidates must possess:

    (i) An M.Phil. Degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate.

    (ii) An M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Biological Sciences and life sciences related degrees of the University of Lagos and other Universities approved by Senate with at least a CGPA 4.00/5.00.
